How roulette came to be
A lot of people especially gamblers are enticed by this game of luck and could not resist playing Roulette. With the fervent hope that Lady Luck would be on their side, people love this game because it can be easily played by anyone. Roulette can trace back to the 17th century, and yes, our forefathers were already playing this game long before the emergence of casinos and online gambling.
The history of Roulette is somewhat obscure and uncertain because of the legends and myths that have been passed from generation to generation. But the history of Roulette began in 1655 in France when the famed Mathematician Blaise Pascal was trying to find the perpetual motion. He designed and created a device for his experiments in a form of a big wheel. When one of his friends saw it, he conceptualized an idea to use it for gambling, thus leading to the invention of the first Roulette table. Unfortunately, Pascal”s hunger for perpetual motion never was realized however, the popularity of the roulette table went on until the present day and beyond.
“Small Wheels”, that is what Roulette means in French, yet it was not until the 19th century when the French connection was made. The first two centuries after the Pascal engineered the first Roulette table; many versions have been added and modified to the original design. However in 1842, the number 0 was added to the Roulette wheel by two French gentlemen, Francois and Louis Blanc. It was believed that the inclusion of the number 0 will increase the house odds of winning for there will be 37 numbers in the Roulette table. There is even a myth about these two Frenchmen, Francois Blanc in particular who founded the first casinos in Monte Carlo, he was believed to be exchanging deals with the devil for the secrets of the game that is why if you get the sum of all the numbers in the roulette table, you get a total of 666 – a number associated with Satanism.
However, during mid 19th century, the addition of the zero to the roulette wheel was illegal and banned in France, which is why the two Frenchmen, introduced and spread the game across Europe. Francois Blanc then founded the very first casinos in Monte Carlo. In the New World, Roulette was played by royalties thus; it was labeled as ”The King of All Casino Games”.
During this time, the popularity of the game also traveled across the Atlantic Ocean and spread throughout the United States of America. As game progresses, the Americans devised a different betting system and this time, they added a double zero (00) to the numbers on the wheel to come up with an even 38. Most casinos in the United States, replaces the double zero with the American Bald Eagle.
Roulette has been regarded in such high esteem, that people crave for the thrill no matter what their physical location may be. Thanks to the widespread use of mainstream internet, this tempting game of luck and chance is available to anyone, anywhere.
